If you have been following my WordPress career’s progress you have probably heard me say things like “All my plugins are free for a reason” or “I don’t want to handle the support of a premium plugin”. With that in mind it probably came as a surprise when I published the Advanced Sidebar Menu Pro plugin a couple days ago.?https://matlipe.com/product/advanced-sidebar-menu-pro/
The truth is I have developed over 100 plugins in the last couple years for various clients and businesses. I have become so familiar with plugin development that I have not styled a theme since the beginning of August. While my plugin development used to be my after work contribution to the WordPress community, it has now become my full time job. Now you will here my say things like “I’m in the WordPress business” and “Business is booming”.
I have wonderful projects from even more amazing clients every day. The WordPress community is growing tremendously and flourishing. I was fortunate enough to becoming involved when it just started catching on so now I am considered a veteran. The downside to my success is there is getting to be less and less time left over for donated time to free plugins. So I came up with a solution.
I have been receiving steady requests for new features and additional functionality of my free plugins since the beginning of time. Many of them are great, very useful ideas. In the beginning I had the time to dedicate to adding these new featured into the plugins without issue. Today it takes a very long time to get around to these types of things. While I will stay up all night to publish a bugfix or maintenance release, I choose to spend a couple hours ?a day with my family over writing enhancements.
I have taken on a new client. You! Each time a purchase is made of my premium plugin, I am putting an hour on my calendar to develop enhancements and handle support. This way I can keep my regular working schedule and still produce results. If I make a lot of sales, I will know this is a worthy cause and can take on less client work. If not, then at least I am not giving up my nights and weekends to develop features that no one is really using. ?I am confident that this new system will be better for everyone.
